Tour Overview

Panafest the Pan-African Historical Theatre Festival stands as Ghana's premier cultural landmark, a powerful tribute to the legacy of the African diaspora. It is more than just a gathering; it is a global movement designed to bridge the gap between the continent and its children abroad, fostering a deep sense of unity and ancestral pride.
To step into Ghana during Panafest is to enter a living canvas. The air vibrates with the steady pulse of traditional drumming, and the streets transform into a kaleidoscope of movement. From high-energy dance and theatrical performances to intricate visual arts, the festival provides a massive stage for African creative expression.Grand processions and parades take over the thoroughfares, featuring participants draped in stunning traditional textiles. As you move between venues, the atmosphere shifts seamlessly from the high-energy joy of a street party to moments of quiet, profound connection.
The journey extends to Ghana’s historic coast. Visits to Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle offer a somber yet necessary look at the transatlantic slave trade. These stone fortresses serve as enduring symbols of the resilience that defines the African spirit
Panafest is a life-altering event. It’s an opportunity to rediscover your roots, build lasting international bonds, and celebrate the unbreakable strength of the African continent. Day 2: Accra City

After breakfast, Visit the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre, a poignant tribute to the life and legacy of the legendary Pan-Africanist who made Ghana his home and workplace.

Take a scenic stop at Independence Square, where you can view the eternal flame of African Liberation, originally ignited by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1961.

We then proceed to the freshly reimagined Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, dedicated to Ghana’s founding president, Dr. Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah. This 5.4-acre site, established in 1992 to protect and celebrate his enduring legacy, has recently undergone its first major renovation. The grounds serve as the final resting place for both Dr. Nkrumah and his wife, Fathia, and feature a museum showcasing artifacts from throughout his life and other significant historical items.

Located right next to the park is the Arts & Crafts Centre, the premier outdoor market in Ghana for traditional handmade goods sourced from across West Africa.

Day 3: Accra l Kumasi

Following a hearty breakfast and hotel check-out, we set off for Kumasi, the historic heart of the Ashanti Empire, where ancient legends remain a part of daily life. As the largest Akan ethnic group in Ghana, the Ashanti people governed this region for centuries, led by a highly sophisticated and organized society.

Arriving in Kumasi in the late afternoon, we will explore the National Cultural Center. This site is home to the Prempeh II Jubilee Museum named after the former Asantehene as well as active craft studios featuring brass casting, pottery, and batik making. At the museum, you will see a replica of the legendary Golden Stool, a sacred object believed to have descended from the heavens, serving as the ultimate spiritual symbol of the Ashanti nation.

Day 4: Kumasi

After breakfast, you will journey into the lush countryside surrounding Kumasi to visit renowned craft communities. Our first stop is the artisan village of Adanwomase, where you can watch the intricate process of hand-weaving Kente cloth on traditional looms, a craft preserved through generations. You’ll have the chance to admire various Kente styles, purchase authentic pieces, and potentially pay a courtesy visit to the village’s Paramount Chief.

Next, we travel to Ntonso, the home of Adinkra textiles. Here, artisans hand-stamp symbolic designs onto cotton fabric. You will learn how traditional black dye is extracted from tree bark and have the opportunity to create your own Adinkra sash to keep as a souvenir. Larger pieces of locally made Adinkra cloth will also be available for purchase.

Day 5: Kumasi l Cape Coast

After breakfast we leave Kumasi and travel toward Cape Coast. Before. Upon arriving in Cape Coast, we will visit the Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This fortress stands as a powerful and somber monument to a difficult chapter in global history. You will experience an emotional tour through the complex which held a greater number of enslaved Africans than any other station in the region as you walk through the dungeons and stand before the infamous "Door of No Return."

Day 6: Elmina Castle l Naming Ceremony

Following breakfast, we depart at 9:00 am to visit Elmina Castle, also known as St. George’s Castle. As the first European structure established in Sub-Saharan Africa, the castle is steeped in a haunting and significant history. After exploring its grounds and chambers, we will walk to the shore for a memorial service. During this ceremony, we will cast bread into the waves and release a wreath with a candle into the sea, observing a moment of silence to honor those lost during the Middle Passage.

Back at the castle, we will participate in the Fihankra ceremony, a powerful ritual designed to reconnect members of the African diaspora with their ancestral roots and the spiritual ties severed by the transatlantic slave trade. This journey of homecoming concludes with a traditional Naming Ceremony at the Chief’s Palace.

DRESS CODE: All participants are kindly requested to wear white for this day's events.

Day 7: Kakum National Park l Reverential Night

We depart at 9:00 am to visit Kakum National Park, one of Ghana’s most renowned conservation areas. Begin with a guided walk along the forest floor, where you can observe a variety of birds and butterflies, and potentially spot some of the park's 40 mammal species, such as monkeys or the elusive forest elephant. Afterward, ascend to the canopy walkway Africa’s only aerial bridge system through the treetops. This 1,000-foot-long path consists of seven bridges and viewing platforms suspended more than 150 feet above the ground.

This evening, you will participate in Reverential Night, considered the most sacred event of the PANAFEST program. The ceremony begins with a gathering at the Mfantsipim Senior High School junction, featuring a ceremonial bonfire used to light candles for the upcoming procession. Led by the Asafo traditional militia, this solemn, candlelit march includes wreath-laying ceremonies as a profound tribute to the ancestors.

Day 8: Emancipation Day l Assin Manso

This morning marks the beginning of a deeply emotional journey that will resonate with you for years to come. We depart the hotel and drive to Assin Manso, the historic burial site of two formerly enslaved individuals from the USA and Jamaica. Their remains were returned and re-interred here in August 1998 during Ghana’s inaugural Emancipation Day Celebration.

We will visit "Donkor Nsuo" (the Slave River), the site where captured Africans were given their final bath on African soil before being marched to the coastal castles for shipment across the Atlantic. You will join a solemn Durbar of Chiefs and the local community of Assin Manso to pay reverence to the ancestors who endured the horrors of the slave route. The day includes a wreath-laying ceremony and a purification rite at the riverbanks. Afterward, we return to Accra for dinner at the hotel.

Day 9: Day at Leisure

Enjoy a full day of leisure to reflect, recover, and rejuvenate after the profound experiences of the journey so far.
